US SENATOR LINDSEY Graham has died after a "brief and sudden illness" at the age of 71.

The Republican politician's office said in a statement that Graham died on Saturday evening.

"Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time," a statement published online said.

Graham was first elected to the Senate in 2003. Prior to that, he had served in the US Air Corps.

In his time in American politics he carved out a name as a staunch supporter of US president Donald Trump, despite previously being a strong critic and running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

He had just returned to the US after a trip to Ukraine to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In a post to Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot.

"Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad! President DONALD J. TRUMP".

Graham was a vocal critic of Ireland's support for Palestine and a strong supporter of Israel. He took issue with Football Association of Ireland (FAI) moves on Ireland's Uefa fixtures with Israel, as well as the Occupied Territories Bill and Ireland's official recognition of the State of Palestine.

Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu conveyed his condolences to Graham's family.

"Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend," he said.

"In our recent meeting, I said, "Lindsey is a great friend of Israel and a cherished friend of mine. We have no better friend than Lindsey."

"Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and America are inseparable. He devoted his life to defending America, strengthening our alliance and standing up for the free world."
