The tiny island where the U.S. and Canada could mend their rift

We picked a helluva time to go RVing in Canada. My wife and I crossed the border in Maine as recent trade talks in Washington were collapsing, and we awoke to news of a major escalation in tariffs and even talk of war. It made for some awkward moments in the days that followed.

"I shouldn't say this because you're Americans," a man on Cape Breton told us, "but most Canadians want nothing to do with the U.S. anymore."

He was genial but not joking. Even if he was exaggerating, his words stung, because we knew there was more than a grain of truth in them. A friend of ours in Maine, who is from Ontario, told us that her family has stopped coming to the U.S., even for family reunions.
