Hundreds gathered in front of city hall in Oldebroek after the newly installed town council announced an anti-LGBTQI+ policy, Omroep Gelderland reported.

City councilors left their first meeting on Thursday evening to a sea of rainbow flags as demonstrators turned out to oppose the new government's announcement that it would remove the rainbow flag during pride month, as well as other anti-LGBTQI+ measures.

Omroep Gelderland estimated around 600 people turned out in the town of around 25,000.

The coalition agreement drawn up by the fundamentalist Protestant party SGP, local Christian party AVO and local party ABO called the rainbow flag "un-Christian" and said it will no longer be flow on International Coming-Out Day.

The protest was organised by local resident Kjeld Mooi. "There are many people who feel unsafe; it is important that the municipality stands up for them," he told broadcaster NOS.
